Olympia*
1985/1998
I moved to Olympia to follow my first lover
who'd been transferred there. The relationship
dissolved weeks after arriving upon discovering
she'd been unfaithful while we'd been apart.
Another first-lies and the bitter taste of infidelity.
Twenty-four and broken-hearted, I cloaked myself
in photography on a mission to reveal the truth about
love through the lens of a 4 x 5 view camera
mounted onto a tripod. Another first.
"Can I photograph you with whoever, or whatever,
gives you the strength to try again after you've had
a tough day?" I asked everyone; the neighbors,
a kind waiter, an 8-year-old boy, an actress, a
writer, a therapist, a boss, a therapist, friends and
mothers and new lovers.
